  • Profile: THE ANTLER COLLECTION IN PURVZIEDIThe antlers exibited here in the loft are not huntingtrophies, except some of them. They were fonnd in the forest while doing the duties of a forest-guard, later as an inspector of environment protection in SlTtere Rezervation.The antlers were found in the Kolka forest starting from Melnsils on the coast of the Riga Sea Gulf till Kosrags near the Diijura. This area occupies 1/3 of the territory of the Reservation.The first antlers of the elks were found in the middle of 60-s. By the way, there were no deer there at that time.The loft was constructed in 1972 in a small corner in order to exhibit the first trophies. Later on it was continued to build by using different kinds of materials, for it was needed to exhibit new antlers therefore ,,the architecture1' is so different.When it was started, it wasn't meant for public survey. During the years of Soviets the zone of borderland was not accessible for tourists. In the loft of ,,Purvziedi" there are exhibited 600 antlers. Several pairs of antlers are together with sculls and a part of a forehead. They are considered to be torn off by wolves. Two sculls of elks are the witnesses of the tragedy in the telephone wires.122 antlers which got burnt in the great fire in 1992 are exhibited in a special sector.There you can see knotty wood-pulp protuberances of different forms, photographies with individual trees from the nearest ... more
