  • Profile: Old chronicles of mention Koknese hill at the meeting of Daugava and PÄ“rse Rivers as an ancient Latgallian and Sellonian hillfort. There still was the wooden castle of Wetseka - King of this appanage in 1205. The stone castle of Koknese archbishop was built in 1209. Knight Rudolph of Yerihow was his first vassal. In its origins this fortress was used only as an fortification on the important junction of the commercial waterways. Starting with the 14th century there also was made the household part to the castle as well as the representative and dwelling part. First buildings in side the protection walls were wooden; they were replace with the stone and brick contructionsbut by inventation the time first fireweapons in the 15th century. Koknese Castle was the archibishop's main domain and residence in the 16th century. There were added some outbuildings and two circular towers in 1509-1524. After rebuilding there were 5 castle towers and 2 forepart towers. Castle was rebuilt by the latest fortification standarts in the "Swedish times" in the 20s of the 17th century. The castle was blasted in 1701 and never renovated since that. For the present day castle ruin sare partly covered by water. Fortified settlement developed at Koknese Castle that grew into a town, that got the town's rights in 1277. Koknese Town was the 4th biggest in Livonia for the 17th century.
